Miguel
Arenas is a missionary of the
General Board of Global
Ministries
(GBGM) of the United Methodist Church, assigned to the Iglesia Metodista
en el Uruguay. From 2002 to 2005 he served at the Crandon Institute in
Salto, as an English of a second language teacher and chaplain of the
school. From 2006 to 2009 he is serving as a local pastor to the Iglesia
Metodista San Lucas in Paysandú.
Miguel
has a B.A. in Education from The University of Concepción of Chile and he
has some theological studies at the Comunidad Teologica Evangelica de
Chile. Regarding the role of education he feels, "Education is not
only to teach someone a certain subject or knowledge skill, it's also a
way to live and share God's love to others, and be involved in ministry
with those around you."
Prior
to his commissioning as a GBGM missionary, Miguel worked in Chile for four
years as an English teacher for the Methodist School in Concepción, and
for three NGO (Nongovernmental organization) projects for adults who were
working towards receiving school diplomas. As a respected lay leader of
his church, Miguel served as president of the Christian Student Movement (MEC)
in his country, guiding and leading young people through different
educational and social programs as well as spiritual counseling,
especially with youngsters from jobless parents. He also facilitated
projects and training for students who couldn't afford tuition, preparing
them from college admittance.
Reflecting upon his calling to be a missionary, he says: " Since I was
a kid, I experienced God's call in my life, my parents showed me and
guided me to know, trust and obey Him, and throughout many different
experiences of faith in my family and local and national church, I
understood that my mission was to serve God by serving others." He
has extensive experience as a lay member in the
IMECH (Iglesia Metodista de
Chile)
working especially in music, liturgy and Christian Education.
